Singer Lenny Kravitz is 43 today

Singer Lenny Kravitz is 43 today. A bit of trivia... If you remember "The Jeffersons," Kravitz is the son of actress Roxie Roker, who played neighbour Helen Willis in the sitcom. Here is the video for "Fly Away" -- one of his first big hits.

Today is John Wayne's 100th birthday

Legendary actor John Wayne would have been 100 today. He died in 1979. Here is a funny clip of Wayne with Dean Martin.

Look at the size of this freakin' pig!

Good Lord! This pig is HUGE. Click here for more.

Yikes! Rosie quits The View

Rosie O'Donnell has quit The View early. She asked for -- and received -- an early exit from her contract. She was supposed to be on the show until mid-June. Her vicious fight with Elisabeth on Wednesday was a sorry end to a stellar run (in my opinion) on the show. Unfortunately, that's what many people will remember. Her fans deserve much better than just to disappear from the airwaves like she has. It's really too bad. Her credibility has been harmed by this early exit. The optics are simply horrible.

I take back what I said about Jordin...

In this post, I suggested that American Idol winner Jordin Sparks would be a terrible talk show guest, but I saw her on The Tonight Show last night with Jay Leno and she was perfectly pleasant and able to hold her own, despite her young age of only 17. And she'll only get better, I'm sure.

Frank Oz is 63 today

The name may not mean anything to you, but you'll certainly know Frank Oz as the voice and hands behind (in?) Muppet characters such as Miss Piggy, Grover and Cookie Monster. I always loved Grover, so here's a clip of him trying to teach kids how to be surprised:

Seven months to go until Ho Ho Ho!

After Rosie and Elisabeth's fight, Alicia Silverstone snubbed Elisabeth

Wow... pretty blatant rudeness from Alicia Silverstone. She must be a good friend of Rosie's, but still... You are a guest on a show that Elisabeth co-hosts. Common civility would have been appropriate. Even a handshake...

Watch the Rosie and Elisabeth fight from The View here

Holy moly! I couldn't believe this when I watched it the other day. These two really went at it. It was actually uncomfortable to watch. A debate is one thing... an all-out F-I-G-H-T is another... and this was no fake tiff. It was serious. Watch and see for yourself.

Jordin Sparks wins American Idol!

As nearly everyone was predicting, 17-year-old Jordin Sparks became America's newest superstar last night after winning season six of American Idol. She beat out Blake Lewis, who was very gracious in defeat. It was a great finale, with Kelly Clarkson returning to the American Idol stage after an absence of several years. She seems to have realized that the show's popularity can boost her record sales. Everyone else has, so why shouldn't she, eh? Sanjaya was back and was offered a prestigious solo performance gig of "You Really Got Me," which he did really really well at! And the crying little girl was back, too! Poor thing. If you're an Idol fan and live in Canada, the end of American Idol means that Canadian Idol starts the following week! Woohoo! We're lucky. We get Idol from January to September.

American Idol to be decided tonight!!

So who's going to win? Blake or Jordin? I want Blake to win but all signs are pointing to Jordin. Unfortunately, Blake is the better performer and, thus, will outdo her in record sales. He will be a better talk show guest, too. So what we're looking at is another Ruben Studdard / Clay Aiken scenario. Jordin's gonna be "aww shucks" but will be a dud on the talk show circuit. Meanwhile, Blake will be charming, engaging and entertaining. So that's what's going to happen tonight. Jordin will win, but Blake will be more successful.

Ottawa Senators in Stanley Cup -- Band releases tribute song

The Ottawa Senators have made it to this year's Stanley Cup final and a local band called Alta Vista Social Club is paying tribute to them in a new song called "Long Way Home." The last time that a Canadian team won the Stanley Cup was in 1993 when the Montreal Canadiens won the trophy. Alta Vista Social Club believes their song's simple message "Cup comes home" will help to bring the cup home. "Long Way Home is about believing in the hockey dream! It's catchy and it's catching on," says AVSC's Larry Pegg. Click here for an MP3 version of the song.

Apolo Anton Ohno wins ABC's Dancing With The Stars!

As many expected, olympian speedskater Apolo Anton Ohno won ABC's Dancing With The Stars last night. He was by far the best dancer throughout the competition and his chemistry with his dance partner, Julianne, was evident. This guy seems to have it all... looks, smarts, personality. If you've ever seen him interviewed on a talk show, you can't help but like him.

Breathe Right nasal strips

Have any readers ever used these before? I did for the first time last night. I just wanted to try them. Wow! They sure do work! I wasn't sure if it would stay on all night, but it certainly did. It's nice to find a product that works. I think I'll try some of their other products, too. The only issue I have is their cost. Very expensive, I find!

Tomorrow's Hump Day column...

... is all about my upcoming university reunion this weekend and how it will feel more like a family reunion than just a gathering of friends. Check it out on the editorial page of tomorrow's Moncton Times & Transcript.

Two Lewisville landmarks reduced to rubble

Two well-known Lewisville landmarks -- the old Kay Arena and Wynwood School -- have now been officially reduced to rubble. Fear not, however, the Kay will be resurrected soon as the Kay Community Centre and will serve another generation of Lewisville citizens' needs. Here's what's left of the Kay -- just a pile of stuff. Formerly, this would have looked right into the entry for the Zamboni.

And all that's left of the old Wynwood School is this hole in the ground.

Funny Heinz commercial

This Heinz commercial uses humour to show how fast their new microwaveable soups heat up. Uhm... in about the same time it takes a man to make love. Yikes!

Equal time to the other two felines

Since I posted a photo of my cat Casey nesting in my "In" basket the other day, I'd better give equal time to cute photos of the other two!

Here's Cindy looking quite regal on the back of the sofa earlier this afternoon.

And here's Charlotte taking a peek to see why I'm bothering her beauty sleep. She likes to sleep with one paw over her eyes to block out the light.

Apolo Anton Ohno turns 25 today

Olympic gold medalist and current Dancing With the Stars competitor Apolo Anton Ohno turns 25 today. Here is a clip from one of his performances on the show. There was a bit of controversy after the show because of its obviously rating a "10" while one of the judges thought it was too "raunchy" and only gave it a "9".

More decluttering progress...

For the first time in at least seven years, my personal files are up to date! Wow. What was a complete and utter disaster is now a well-organized filing system. Feels great knowing where everything is! On the weekend, I also cleaned out my pantry and brought a box of food to the food bank. I can now actually find my spices! What a concept... and trust me -- it WAS just a concept before this decluttering. I couldn't find anything except maybe salt and pepper. ;-) Next: Cleaning up the downstairs bedroom... and then everything is done!

Happy Victoria Day, Canada!

Today is a holiday in Canada - Victoria Day. The day honours Queen Victoria's birthday and the current queen's birthday, as well.

Happy 59th birthday to Leo Sayer

Singer Leo Sayer turns 59 today. Here's his #1 hit from May 1977, When I Need You, performed on The Muppet Show:

Really bad swimming here!

Most people who visit salt-water beaches know to look out for jellyfish, right? Then this is definitely NOT a place to take a dip!

Fighting over a very well-known telephone number

According to this Associated Press news story:

"One-hit wonder Tommy Tutone made the phone number 867-5309 famous in the band's 1982 hit single, which uses the digits over and over in its catchy refrain.

Now, a Rhode Island company and a national firm are battling over the right to use the number, which doesn't reach the "Jenny" that Tutone sings about, but could find callers a decent plumber.

Two years ago, Gem Plumbing & Heating of Lincoln, R.I., trademarked the phone number in the early 1980s hit, which reached No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Gem acquired the number in Rhode Island when its original owner, Brown University, gave up 867-5309 after growing weary of the constant prank calls.

Gem's number works in the 401 area code in Rhode Island and the 617 area code in southern Massachusetts.

But Florida-based Clockwork Home Services, also a plumbing company, uses a toll-free version of 867-5309 in New England. They argue a company can only trademark a vanity number, like 1-800-FLOWERS.

Gem won round one in its legal fight over the number when a federal judge in Boston recently barred Clockwork from using the number in Rhode Island and Massachusetts, effective this week. But Clockwork's lawyers said they would fight on.

Tommy "Tutone" Heath told The Boston Globe that he'd prefer if neither company used the number.

"It's ridiculous," said Heath. "If I wanted to get into it, I could probably take the number away from both of them.""

Here's what a all the fuss is about... a GREAT song!

For all you pyromaniacs out there! :)

Ewwwww @ porta-potty incident

Wow this is dumb...

This guy is trying to shotgun a beer while being tasered. The taser wins, obviously. Some people have way too much time on their hands!

Remembering Gilda Radner

The great Gilda Radner, a former cast member of Saturday Night Live (1975-80), passed away on this day 18 years ago at the age of 42 after a battle with ovarian cancer. Here she is in a scene with Jane Curtin from Saturday Night Live -- that's Gilda on the left, in case she's way before your time:

Jimmy Stewart would have been 99 today

Jimmy Stewart would have been 99 today. He starred in one of my favourite movies of all time, It's a Wonderful Life. Here's the final scene where George (played by Stewart) is saved from jail ($8,000 missing from his savings and loan company) by the generosity of his friends and family:
